How to write a good dedication

The dedication is the shortest part of the book and the most read. One sentence, two at most. Everyone who opens the book sees it, which is exactly why a detail only the two of you know beats a general good wish.

  • Write a detail, not an adjective. Not “you are so special”, but the thing she always says in the kitchen.
  • Keep it short. A long dedication spends the moment the cover just bought you.
  • Read it out loud. If it is odd to say, it is odd to read.

Questions

How long can a dedication be?

One or two sentences sit comfortably on the page. Longer text prints fine, but the first page works harder the shorter it is.

Should I write it myself?

Yes, that line is yours. What is here is a starting point: use one as it stands, change a word, or just take the shape and write your own.

Can I sign it?

If you want to. Put your name in the dedication field on the order form and it prints exactly as you typed it.

Can I change it later?

Yes. The dedication appears in your proof like everything else, and it can be changed before you approve it.
