A New Baby Gift for the Family, Not Just the Baby

Newborns get twelve identical outfits. A personalized new baby gift book is for the parents, the older sibling, and the child who will read it at six.

New parents receive an astonishing volume of clothing in size 0 to 3 months, roughly eleven items more than a baby that size can wear before outgrowing them. They also receive muslins. So many muslins. The muslins are genuinely useful and this is not a criticism of muslins.

What almost nobody sends is a thing for the family, as opposed to a thing for the infant. And in the first eight weeks the family is the part under strain.

A personalized new baby gift book is one of the few presents in this category with a second life. It gets read to a baby who does not understand it, then read by a five-year-old who does, and it is the only item from the newborn pile still in the house at that point.

Who it is actually for, at each stage

Month one, it is for the parents. They will read it on the sofa at an hour that should not exist, and it will say their child's name in a sentence that somebody wrote on purpose. That lands differently than a card.

Year one to three, it is a bedtime object. The story is short, the pictures are large, and the child recognises faces in it. Recognition is the whole pleasure at that age.

Year five and after, it is a story about themselves. This is the part parents do not anticipate. A child who can read discovers a book where the main character has their name and their family, and the fact that it existed before they could read it makes it more interesting, not less.

Most newborn presents peak on the day they are unwrapped. This one peaks around a child's sixth birthday.

The older sibling problem, which this quietly solves

If there is already a child in the house, the new baby is not primarily good news to them. It is a rival with better press coverage.

Writing the older sibling into the book as a character, ideally as the one who does something important in the story, is the most effective use of this gift. Not as a footnote. As someone the plot needs. Books built this way get read aloud by the older child to the baby, which is exactly the outcome everyone wants and nobody can engineer directly.

Up to three people can be in the story, which usually means the baby, the sibling and one parent, or the baby and both parents.

What makes a good brief before there is anything to say

The awkwardness of this occasion is that a newborn has no history. There is nothing to tell a story about yet. A week-old person has done nothing except exist, alarmingly.

So the good books here are not about the baby. They are about the arrival: the waiting, the name and where it came from, the house getting ready, the people who were already there. A story that ends with the baby rather than starting with them.

Useful things to send:

  • Where the name came from, especially if it is a family name with a story attached.
  • What the parents were like while they waited, which is usually funnier than they realise.
  • The older sibling's opinion on the whole matter, quoted verbatim if possible.
  • One thing about the house or the place, so the book has a setting.

What you are actually ordering

  • One edition: a 24-page hardcover with 10 illustrated spreads, up to three characters.
  • The story and the artwork are AI-generated from your photos and your brief, then reviewed page by page by a person before you see it.
  • You approve a full digital proof before any payment is taken, and revisions at that stage are part of the process, not an extra.
  • Photographs are kept private, never used to train models, and deleted after the book ships.
  • Pricing sits on the pricing page.

Photographs of a newborn, and a word about consent

You need clear faces, ordinary light, and not much else. Phone photos are fine.

Two practical notes. Newborn photographs are difficult reference material because a two-week-old face changes weekly and does not have settled features yet, so books ordered in the first month often work better with the parents and sibling drawn from photos and the baby drawn softly. And if you are a friend or a grandparent ordering this, ask the parents before sending pictures of their child. Most will say yes immediately. Asking is still the right move, and it also gets you better photographs than the ones on their public feed.

A style that suits a nursery

Four styles do most of the work for this occasion.

Chalk pastel is soft and slightly grainy and looks like it belongs on a nursery shelf without trying to. Watercolour is the classic storybook register and the safest choice if you have no strong opinion. Scandinavian minimal suits parents whose entire flat is beige and who would find anything sweeter physically painful. Anime shoujo is the outlier, and it is the right pick surprisingly often when the parents are in their late twenties and grew up on it.

They are all on the styles page, with the four suggestions collected on the new baby gift page.

Baby shower, or after the birth?

Both work, and they produce different books.

Ordering for a shower means the baby's name might not be settled and there are no photographs of them, so the book has to be about the waiting. That is a real and quite beautiful story, and it means the gift arrives when the parents still have the attention to read it.

Ordering after the birth gives you a name, a face and a birth story, which makes a fuller book. It also means it arrives during the worst-sleep window, so consider sending it at three months rather than three weeks. There is no rule that a new baby gift has to be handed over in the hospital, and a present that shows up in the flat six weeks after everyone else has stopped calling is a kindness of its own.

The honest summary

The nappy cakes and the tiny cardigans do their job and disappear, as they should. Nobody needs a keepsake dungaree.

What survives from that pile, five years on, is whatever had the child's name written into it deliberately. Usually that is one book. It might as well be one worth reading twice.
