- When should you order?
- Three weeks before you need it: a few days for the proof, one to two weeks for print and delivery. If it is meant to arrive at the start of a school holiday, count backwards from that rather than from the first day of term, when nothing gets read.
- The detail that brings the story to life
- What they already love is the way in. The book they make you read every night, the character they pretend to be in the garden, the subject they will not stop explaining at dinner. A child who is lukewarm about reading is usually not lukewarm about everything, and the story has to start where they already are.
- Will it actually get read more than once?
- That depends on the pattern more than the pictures. Short sentences and something that repeats hold a young reader through a second and third reading, which is what turns a gift into a habit. Between three and six that matters most; after seven, being the hero of a real event matters more.
