Most Valentine's shopping is a search for a category. Flowers, chocolate, a dinner reservation, something in a small box. The categories are fine. The trouble is that they are categories, and after a few years together the person opening them can usually name the shop.

A book made out of your own story is not a category. It is one object that could only have been made for one person, and it has the useful property of still existing in March.

What actually goes in it

Not a template with two names dropped into it. You send the photos and you tell us what happened: how you met, the flat with the broken radiator, the argument about the map, the morning that turned out to matter more than it seemed at the time. We build that into a story with a shape, and illustrate it in one of twenty-four styles.

The specific beats the grand. "We fell in love" is not a scene. "You waited forty minutes in the rain because you had read the timetable wrong and would not admit it" is a scene, and it is the page they will show people.

Three to six real moments is usually enough for a twenty-four page book. If you have two, we can work with two; the story gets longer rather than thinner.

Which style suits which couple

The full comparison lives in the style guide, but for Valentine's the shortlist is short.

Watercolour storybook is the safe answer and deserves to be. Soft, warm, hard to dislike, and it flatters faces and photographs of every age. If you are not certain of their taste, this is the one.

Impressionist is for a memory that has gone slightly soft at the edges. A summer, a garden, a place that no longer exists. It paints the feeling of the afternoon rather than an exact likeness, which is either perfect or wrong depending on what you want.

Anime shoujo is sincere rather than ironic, and it is the right call for a couple who would find watercolour too polite. Feelings drawn at full volume.

Minimalist line art is for the couple who would be embarrassed by a sentimental gift and still want one. The restraint does the feeling for them.

What you are ordering

A printed hardcover, twenty-four pages, illustrated throughout, with your dedication on the first page. One book, one style, cover to last page.

The illustration is generated with AI from the photos you send and then reviewed by a person before anything is printed, which is the part worth saying plainly: nobody is painting this by hand in a studio, and the proof you approve is the real thing rather than a mockup.

You see that proof before you pay. If the story has missed the point, or the style is not doing what you hoped, that is the moment to say so.

February is shorter than it looks

This is the part people get wrong. The book is made to order: written, illustrated, proofed, approved, printed and shipped. The proof usually comes back within a few days, but the print and the post are the parts nobody can hurry.

If you are reading this in the first week of February, you are fine. If you are reading it on the tenth, order today and ask us to prioritise it. If you are reading it on the thirteenth, buy the flowers and give the book at the end of the month, when it will get more attention anyway.

There is a version of this gift that works better late, honestly. A book that arrives on a Tuesday in March, for no reason, lands harder than one that arrives on the day it was obliged to.
